Momus is Cool
This weekend was an eventful one. The excellent part of it was that I was able to dress up as a lolita for all 3 days of it. Saturday I had off since my adult students were taking their final exam. I felt a little guilty about that, but Etsuko assured me multiple times that she didn't need me to be there. She is really sweet. I went shopping on Saturday in Namba but managed to restrain myself from buying anything Lolita. I did get a few other things, but it was mostly a trip to show off my new Innocent World skirt (see prior post!!). I wish I had some pictures of my outfit, but there was nobody around. :(
Sunday was the Momus event at the Doll House Cafe. It was kind of a counterculture parade. People were dressed up in gothic wear, visual kei wear, all kinds of Lolita (sweet, goth, ero, etc) and there were a lot of cool vintage looks. We arrived at four and chatted with a bunch of people about their outfits. The night included two short movies. One was a gothic-style Alice movie. She and the Mad Hatter were playing chess, the Cheshire cat was there too. She died in the end (cutely ...). The second one was more arty and I didn't qutie get what was going on. There was a lot of seemingly suggestive content, but no one dropped anything inappropriate so I am sure the theme was something else. It was interesting, but I hate things that take themselves to seriously. Film for me has always been a medium for stories or information. I can't find it in my soul to celebrate it as a medium for much else. I feel the same about a lot of modern art, too. Earnest or not I still dislike overly dramatic stuff-it's too much emo for my classisist's soul.
I was afraid Momus would be more of the same, but he was actually amazingly cool. It was just him and is iBook (yay!!). He sang, it played background music that included all kinds of sounds that formed a pleasing melody. His lyrics were great, and I was kind of embarassed when we were the only ones laughing (being the only 3 English speakers there aside from him). Most people said afterwards that they wished they had understood more because of how we laughed. Believe me, I understand how they felt. Most of my life here in gaikoku is spent the same way. BUt he was great-I highly recommend you check out his stuff.
